Nesian Fest 2011 – Nesian NINE : Trey Smoov

Posted: May 2nd, 2011 | Comments Off

What does amazing music, Don Ho’s Island Grill and about 1000 lucky Oahu residents have in common? NESIAN FEST. 93.1 da Paina and Riddim House Entertainment presents Nesian Fest 2011 on Saturday May 14th at Don Ho’s Island Grill at the Aloha Tower Market Place, with our very own beloved, Nesian NINE, Trey Smoov (N9 cousins from Carson, CA), and Ray Leger, Local Culture, Kaipo Kapua, Rep UR Roots, and Twenty20.

Stili Malpeai, N9 band manager, reminisced about the six-city West Coast tour that N9 and Trey Smoov just finished. “It has been a blessing to have my cousin’s tour with N9 and it will be special to share the stage with them at Don Ho’s on the 14th,” shares Stili. Since the tour, the consensus of the over 9000 fans on Facebook, Nesian NINE is in very high demand with comments requesting a show in New Zealand, Australia, and numerous other places.

Since forming in June 2008, Nesian NINE has achieved a number of accomplishments over the past couple of years. The momentum from their debut album that was released in October 2009, “Press Play,” Nesian NINE has played with some of the biggest names in the music industry including Boyz II Men, Brian McKnight, Eryka Badu, KC and JoJo just to name a few. “Press Play” incorporates a little bit of the old school vibe blended with the right touch of the island feel. Nesian NINE is an island band that can play all types of music from reggae to R&B, from soul ballads to old school. They can do it all.

Nesian NINE

Nesian NINE is close-knit band of nine family members from Oahu, these band members exude talent and more talent. These are the amazing members of Nesian NINE starting with the front four, James “Ziggy” Maika, Lauititi “LT” Togafau, Jeremy “Kainoa” Salave’a, Billy Faoa, and the band members, Eddie “Eddie Licks” Lafaele (Guitar), Jr “StyXx” Lafaele (Drummer), Travis “Buja” Alcos (Keys), Rick Lepule (Keys), Amako “Mad Max” Malepeai (Bass).

Trey Smoov

The members of Trey Smoov, Mack Daddy, YC, and Vocalz were born and bred in Southern California where their journey to stardom began. These three motivated and spiritual young men posted a YouTube video, simply tagged “Samoans Singing,” which quickly got peoples attention and shattered the existing misconceptions that Samoans are only good at sports. Their angelic harmonies and pitch-perfect delivery proved them to be much more than just three singing Samoans. Trey Smoov’s musical talent is etched in their DNA, much like their boyish good looks.

On Friday May 13th from 5:00-8:00pm, Nesian NINE and Trey Smoov are taking over 93.1 da Paina. It will be 3 hours hosted by these two bands. Nesian NINE will perform a rendition of “You Baby” along with the friendly banter between cousins. No band has ever taken over a radio show here in Hawaii before.

Pre-sale tickets, $20, are available for purchase at Rasta Headquarters at 94-226 Leoku St (or their new location in Waipahu and Keeaumoku St.), Missing Polynesia Boutique at 98-029 Hekaha St. Building 5 Unit 32 Harbor Center in Aiea, or from Capone’s Ultimate Detail at 844 Queen Street. Inspiration, faith, strength, determination are all characteristics that three best friends from Carson, CA possess and share with the world through their music. Those three friends are the R&B/Hip Hop trio sensation, Trey Smoov. This inspirational group, Trey Smoov, is coming to Honolulu to share their story and provide guidance and strength for our youth with a High School Concert Series. Our very own chart topping sensation, Nesian NINE is bringing Trey Smoov, their cousins, to introduce and share their talents with Hawaii. “I feel very blessed to be able to share the amazing talents of my cousins with the amazing community in Hawaii,” said Stili Malpeai, Nesian NINE band manager. Trey Smoov will be performing for the students at Farrington High School on May 12, 2011 at 12:00pm and Waipahu High School on May 13, 2011 at 12:00pm where they will offer insight into life through their journey to where they are today and play their music from their debut album Misconception.

The members of Trey Smoov, Mack Daddy, YC, and Vocalz were born and bred in Southern California where their journey to stardom began. Their angelic harmonies and pitch-perfect delivery proved them to be much more than just three singing Samoans. Trey Smoov’s musical talent is etched in their DNA, much like their boyish good looks.

The lucky kids at these high schools are going to be blessed with the opportunity to witness Trey Smoov’s energized performance and the opportunity to learn, be motivated, and inspired by the hard work and determination. With such a large contingency of Polynesian students at these high schools, these students will be able to relate to Trey Smoov and their story.

Their debut album, Misconception, is a representation of highs and lows of love, life and relationships. The music and tracks on the album deal with universal issues and speaks to anyone who appreciates ‘real’ music regardless of their race or socioeconomic background.

Trey Smoov recently finished a major West Coast six-city tour with their cousins Nesian NINE. They played shows in Las Vegas, Washington, Portland, San Francisco, San Diego and Los Angeles. Vinyl Wine Debut Album Release

Posted: April 13th, 2011 | Comments Off

Support a band, VINYL WINE, that is known to keep the animals up past their bed time, at their album release party on Saturday April 23, 2011 at 9:00pm at Kelley O’Neils at 311 Lewers Street, Honolulu HI 96815. VINYL WINE has clearly made an impact on the music scene on Oahu with numerous shows all over the island and a following of locals and tourists alike. With their new, very fittingly entitled album “Another Weekend,” Vinyl Wine has managed to capture the essence of being a rock band. This is a show not to be missed. In true Vinyl Wine style, the show will be full of high energy and will captivate the audience with the creative flare that fans have come to love.

VINYL WINE plays at Lulu’s every Friday night and Matty Liu, Promotions Director at Lulu’s feels that “Vinyl Wine is by far the most exciting party band in all of Hawaii. When they play a live show it’s full blast, they know how to bring the show! Good times and great music. That’s Vinyl Wine…”

“Another Weekend” was recorded from start to finish in Honolulu’s Chinatown and mastered by Jeff Lipton of Peerless mastering in Boston, MA. The album, hopefully the first of many, is a pleasant divergence from the onslaught of the “same old same old” music played by so many current bands in Hawaii. The album is clearly a product of its time, with a wide variety of musical influences, but sounds like hand claps, percussion and gang vocals give it a lively feel with a throwback to the older days. Though their musical styles and influences span punk to reggae and hip-hop to funk, Vinyl Wine definitely identifies as a rock band. The album is pleasantly danceable and has a great range; their style is distinct, but the album still feels like listening to a well-crafted mix tape – anything but boring.

It is our pleasure to introduce you to the members of Vinyl Wine: Chris Mozo is the lead vocalist and plays the acoustic guitar. Chris started playing music as a way to connect with people through his music and lyrics. With a wide-range of influences from 2Pac to Johnny Cash and Red Hot Chili Peppers and Sublime to Sex Pistols, it is not hard to see why the band’s sound is as diverse. Despite being named Cosmopolitan’s most eligible bachelor November 2001 in Hawaii and playing a bad disco dancer on a commercial for McDonald’s, Chris is still down to earth. Next we have Todd Elrod playing the electric guitar and singing backup vocals. Starting out playing the clarinet, Todd tested out the drums in middle school and quickly moved to the guitar in high school. He developed his talents while playing in the Seattle grunge scene of the 90′s. Todd’s college band gained notoriety at Washington State. It was destiny when Todd moved to Hawaii all the way from Seattle to meet Chris and create VINYL WINE. Up next we have Aaron Friedman on the bass. Raised on hip hop in Oakland, CA, Aaron’s musical tastes and experiences have diversified since moving to Hawaii, ranging from reggae to funk and rock to samba. Aaron is a partner in Fort Union Studio, where he engineered the VINYL WINE debut album. Last but not least is Seann Carroll the drummer. Seann started out playing mostly jazz until he moved to Hawaii from Seattle, WA. His complex rhythms and sweet beats have led Seann to share the stage with Jake and Bruce Shimabukuro, John and Guy Cruz, Anuhea and others.

The second track on “Another Weekend”, titled Till Monday is definitely going to be appropriate for the album release show. Till Monday is about celebrating the weekend. We work hard Monday through Friday and the weekends are for living!

Saturday April 23rd at Kelley O’Neils, VINYL WINE will put on a show not to be missed. For more information about VINYL WINE check them out on their website www.VinylWine.com, don’t forget to LIKE our Facebook page or contact Chris Mozo at VinylWineBand [at] gmail.com or at 808-228-6966. “Another Weekend” is available on iTunes now.
